Bean

Robusta Coffee Origin Lampung

This coffee bean is cultivated in the Ulu Belu-Tanggamus area on the island of Sumatra, in Lampung Province, with the type of variety called Robusta coffee. This plant has a shallow root system and grows into a tree up to 10 meters high. Robusta coffee leaves are oval in shape with a tapered tip. Leaves grow on stems, branches, and twigs. On the stem and branches, the leaves grow alternately, while on the twigs, the leaves grow in the same plane.

In terms of size, Robusta coffee cherries are smaller than Arabica. When young, the skin of the fruit is green and turns red when ripe. Ripe fruit remains firmly attached to the stem and does not fall off like arabica. The shape of the seeds tends to be rounded and smaller in size than arabica.

Robusta coffee grows at an altitude of 700–1000 meters above sea level, with an average temperature needed for this plant of 26°C and 2000–3000 mm of rainfall per year. This plant grows well in soils that have a pH of about 5.5–6.5. Robusta growth usually begins with the growth of flowers in the axils of the primary branches. During the dry season, 3-4 groups of flowers bloom in each armpit.

Robusta coffee is grown and cared for with great care by local farmers, who plant, harvest, and process the coffee beans professionally. The first step in processing robusta coffee is to sort the coffee beans by hand.Coffee beans are selected according to standards and are not defective, as well as sorted by cleaning them from twigs, leaves, and others.

Furthermore, RDP (Robusta Dry Process) processing is carried out, which is the process of processing coffee without going through the stage of peeling the skin of the coffee fruit. Stripping is done directly by drying the coffee cherries to be exposed to the hot sun. Drying is done with a 10-cm-thick base. This type of drying must be turned frequently to ensure that the coffee cherries dry evenly.
Because it depends on sunlight, this RDP processing takes a long time and a large area. Drying time can last up to 15 days.
